Strategic Litigation
LAW has supported legal action in national courts across multiple countries, before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice, UN treaty bodies, and under universal jurisdiction in domestic courts abroad.
Many of these have been firsts: the first communication against a state for mass rape committed by its own army, the first criminal case in a region arguing that domestic servitude amounts to slavery, the first testimony by survivors of a genocide before a court of law. Throughout, the security and protection of claimants and witnesses is paramount. A case is not worth bringing if it puts the people bringing it at risk.
